Philip was born in Keighley, Yorks and educated in America and Britain. He was a teacher in Jordan with VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas). After a stint on a pirate radio station, he went legitimate and joined the BBC.

Philip has been a BBC correspondent and anchorman for more than 30 years. He has presented all of BBC TV's main news programmes including the One, Six and Nine O'clock News (as it was then called).

For the past few years he has been a regular "face" on BBC News 24 and BBC World - the international television news channel. His prime time newscast rebroadcast by WLIW in New York attracts more viewers than CNN.
