Stephen
is one of the best known faces of international television
news. For twelve years he's been the front man for Sky News,
CNN and for the past five years at BBC World - covering every
major international news story in that time. With Sky at
its launch in the late 80s, he later moved to CNN in Atlanta
and again to BBC World in 1996. In April 2000 Stephen launched
the feature IT programme, Click Online. In the first year
Stephen presented from Germany, Spain,India, Taiwan and the
USA covering the main issues and big ideas in the world of
Information Technology.
A journalist for twenty six years he graduated quickly from newspaper
reporter to television producer/reporter... first with BBC News
and Current Affairs' Nationwide (the programme that was watched
every evening by a quarter of the UK's entire population) and
from there to ITN, Independent Television News.
Most memorable news stories, he says, were the Birmingham pub
bombings by the IRA in 1974, the Falklands War of 1982, the Gulf
War, the death and funeral of the Princess of Wales and latterly
as one of BBC World's main anchors on the Kosovo War.
Stephen's main interests outside work are rugby, tennis and films.
He presents the annual Oscars programme. He's also something
of a thespian, having once just missed out on the romantic lead
in a major movie - by failing the fencing test.
Born in Hereford, Stephen is married to a BBC radio producer,
and he has three sons. He is Youth Chairman of the world-famous
London Welsh rugby club and is a School Governor.
