Mediaset
S.p.A. is Italy's most important privately-owned communications and
broadcasting group. It was created in 1993 following the restructuring of
Fininvest´s television operations. That same year, Fininvest
contributed to Mediaset rights for television programs and stakes in
several film production and distribution companies. Between 1994 and 1995
Fininvest contributed to Mediaset, Publitalia '80 and RTI and Mediaset acquired
Videotime, RTI Music and Elettronica Industriale. Since 1996 its shares
are traded in the Italian Stock Exchange. Mediaset broadcasts three
terrestrial channels in Italy: Canale 5, Italia 1 and Rete 4. Mediaset´s
main companies are: R.T.I.
S.p.A. is the group company that holds the broadcast licenses for Canale
5, Italia 1 and Retequattro and heads up the Italian Commercial Television
Division. Through its subsidiaries (Videotime S.p.A., Elettronica Industriale
S.p.A. and Mediatrade S.p.A.) R.T.I. manages the three channels. Videotime
is the television production arm of the group with two television centres
in Milan, one television centre in Rome and regional studios. Elettronica
Industriale owns and manages the broadcast signal infrastructure for the
three channels. And Mediatrade is responsible for international rights
trading for films, television series, cartoons, documentaries and sport,
as well as the production and coproduction of television fiction. Publitalia
'80 S.p.A. is the Mediaset Group's advertising arm and sells
advertisng for the Group's three channels. Mediadigit
S.p.A. owns and operates the Group's activities in new media and
thematic channels. The company owns 10% of CFN S.p.A (controlled by Class
Editore), which broadcasts the financial channel Cfn. Mediaset
also owns 19.5% of the Italian fixed-line telecom company, Albacom S.p.A.,
100% of Publieurope International Ltd. (through Publieuros Ltd.) and 100%
of Mediaset Investment S.a.r.l.. Mediaset Investment is based in
Luxembourg and manages the group´s international operations. The Group,
directly and through Mediaset Investment, owns 40% of Gestevisión
Telecinco S.A. and Publiespaña S.A. (from January 1st, 2003 Mediaset will
increase its stake in both companies to 52%). Canale
5 Canale
5 began its operations in 1978 as Telemilano, a local TV station.
Afterwards, it reach a national footprint through several local TV
stations. In 1980 it changed its name to Canale 5 and began broadcasting
as a national channel. Canale 5 is a general entertainment channel with
news programs, fiction, light entertainment and sport. In 2001 it had an
audience share of 23.6%. Italia
1 Italia
1 was acquired by Fininvest at the end of 1982. It´s a general
entertainment channel with fiction, films, light entertainment, sport and
cartoons and it targets a younger audience. In 2001 it had an audience
share of 10.3%. Retequattro Retequattro
was bought by Fininvest in 1984. Retequattro targets an older audience and
its popular among older women. It shows news programs, films, fiction,
light entertainment and arts programs. In 2001 it had an audience

S.p.A. trades in the Italian stock exchange since 1996 and its main
shareholders are: Fininvest S.p.A. 48.356%

0.677% and Fininvest Finanziaria D'Investimento S.p.A
47.679%),
Lehman Brothers International Europe
2.279%, Putnam Investments 2.236% and Kingdom Investimentos e Servicos
Sociedade Unipersonal LDA 2.285%. Fininvest S.p.A. is one of the
largest Italian companies and its controlled (96%) by the family of the
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
